The Master of Health of Health Systems/Hospital Management (MHSM/HM) is one of a series of new Master Programmes being set up to strengthen human resources in health in the Syrian Arab Republic and in the region. The HSM/HM Programme has developed from the Diplomas in Health Systems Management and Hospital Management.

The Programme is a collaborative project between the Centre for Strategic Health Studies (CSHS), Damascus, and the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM), UK, funded by the European Union (EU).  As well as expertise in developing and running successful Master Programmes, LSTM has significant experience of organizing postgraduate courses in Syria and the region.  Needs assessments carried out in February 2007 provided evidence from a range of stakeholders of the relevance of capacity building in health management in Syria.  Initially, teaching staff will be from LSTM principally, assisted by CSHS staff, to whom increasing responsibility will be transferred over a number of years.

Aims of the programme
The MHSM/HM will, (a) ensure high quality teaching, learning and research through the development of synergies between staff with proven track records of successful teaching and research; (b) provide a Programme that is relevant to both potential students and employers, acknowledging the current challenges in health systems development and; (c) enhance the quality of the student experience at the CSHS, Damascus.

On completing the MHSM/HM Programme, graduates will have extensive knowledge regarding past and current health systems management issues, including the origins and historical development of health systems and their management, the philosophies that underpin different HSM approaches to a problem, and the research methods necessary to answer today’s HSM questions and challenges.  Graduates will be able to apply the knowledge and skills gained, to synthesise information from a wide range of sources and act on it, plan, implement and evaluate critically, HSM interventions, make appropriate decisions that make the best use of scarce resources, and foster an approach that will enable them to continue to learn in the future.

Career Opportunities
The interdisciplinary nature of the programme reflects the skills, knowledge and understanding required to practice in Health Systems/Hospital Management. The graduates of the programme will be qualified to work in managerial positions in health centres, hospitals, health programmes, regional and national government, and international organisations. The Master Programme also qualifies participants for specialist posts in academic institutions. Graduates will be equipped to pursue higher level academic qualifications such as professional and academic PhD programmes.
